Have you ever imagined creating a coloring book, journal, planner, or activity book and seeing it available for sale on Amazon?

That idea caught my attention—especially the possibility of learning how to create and sell coloring books. I enjoy creative projects, but I also want to understand the practical side: how the books are designed, how they are published, what they cost, and whether they can realistically become a source of extra income.

That curiosity led me to Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, better known as **Amazon KDP**.

KDP allows independent creators to publish ebooks, paperbacks, and hardcover books through Amazon. For printed books, Amazon uses a print-on-demand system. That means a book can be printed when a customer places an order, so the publisher does not have to purchase boxes of books or store inventory at home. Printing costs are deducted from the royalty earned when a copy sells.

That sounds wonderfully simple, but creating a book people will want to buy still requires work. You need an original idea, an appealing cover, a properly formatted interior, accurate keywords, a thoughtful product listing, and a plan for helping people discover it.

In this beginner-friendly guide, we’ll look at:

- What Amazon KDP is and how it works
- The types of books you can create
- How coloring books, journals, and other book ideas differ
- What it may cost to get started
- How royalties and printing expenses work
- Mistakes beginners should avoid
- What the KDP class inside the Pay It Forward Learning Center teaches

I am still learning about this opportunity myself, so this isn’t a promise of quick or passive income. It is an honest look at what is involved and where a beginner can learn the process step by step.

Let’s see whether Amazon KDP could become one more creative strand in our work-from-home spiderweb.

## What Is Amazon KDP?

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing is a self-publishing platform that allows individuals to publish books and make them available through Amazon.

Despite having “Kindle” in its name, KDP is not limited to ebooks. Creators can publish:

- Kindle ebooks
- Paperback books
- Hardcover books
- Coloring and activity books
- Journals and notebooks
- Planners and logbooks
- Puzzle books
- Children’s books
- Fiction and nonfiction books

For printed books, Amazon handles the printing and order fulfillment. When someone purchases your book, Amazon prints a copy and ships it to the customer. You do not need to order a large quantity in advance, keep books piled in the spare bedroom, or make daily trips to the post office.

Amazon deducts the printing cost from the sale and pays the remaining royalty according to its current royalty structure. Paperback royalties sold through Amazon are generally calculated using either a 50% or 60% royalty rate, depending on the book’s list price and marketplace, minus the cost of printing.

Here is a simplified example:

**Royalty rate × list price − printing cost = estimated royalty**

The actual amount depends on factors such as:

- Your book’s selling price
- Page count
- Book dimensions
- Black-and-white or color printing
- Paper selection
- The Amazon marketplace where it is purchased

This is especially important when creating coloring books. A coloring book with black line drawings may cost less to print than a full-color children’s book, but the exact cost depends on the book’s specifications. Before publishing, KDP shows the estimated printing cost and minimum allowable price.

The KDP account itself does not require you to purchase inventory upfront. However, that does not mean creating a good book is automatically free. You may choose to pay for design software, original illustrations, keyword-research tools, proofreading, advertising, or proof copies.

The appealing part is that you can begin with one book, learn from the process, and improve with each new project—without first turning your garage into a miniature bookstore.

## What Can You Create and Sell With Amazon KDP?

One of the most exciting things about Amazon KDP is the variety of books you can create. You do not have to begin by writing a 300-page novel or sharing your entire life story—although that book may be waiting for you too.

Beginner-friendly Amazon KDP ideas may include:

- Coloring books for children or adults
- Activity and puzzle books
- Guided journals
- Blank notebooks
- Planners and trackers
- Logbooks
- Workbooks
- Recipe books
- Short how-to guides
- Children’s storybooks
- Full-length fiction or nonfiction books

### Coloring Books

Coloring books are especially interesting because they combine creativity with a specific purpose. You could create books based on gardening, baking, animals, inspirational sayings, holidays, relaxation, or educational topics.

For example, I could imagine creating a garden-themed coloring book, a simple healthy-food coloring book for children, or even an encouraging coloring book for women beginning a new chapter in life. The best idea would be one that matches both a real audience and something I genuinely enjoy.

A coloring book requires more than placing random pictures on pages. The illustrations should be original or properly licensed, suitable for the intended audience, formatted correctly, and printed clearly. The cover also needs to communicate exactly what the customer will find inside.

It is helpful to know that Amazon does **not generally classify coloring books as low-content books**. According to KDP, low-content books typically contain repetitive pages designed to be filled in, such as notebooks, planners, diaries, and logbooks. Coloring books, puzzle books, and children’s books are generally treated differently because their pages contain distinct content.

### Journals, Notebooks, and Planners

Journals and notebooks may appear easier because their interiors can be more repetitive. However, that also means many similar products are already available. A plain notebook with a pretty cover may struggle to stand out unless it serves a clearly defined audience or purpose.

A more focused idea might be:

- A garden planting and harvest journal
- A sourdough baking log
- A caregiver self-care planner
- A healthy-habits tracker
- A retirement dream journal
- A gratitude journal for grandmothers

The more clearly a book is created for a particular person or need, the easier it may be to explain why it is useful.

### Activity Books and Workbooks

Activity books can include puzzles, prompts, games, educational exercises, or guided projects. Workbooks can help readers learn a skill or move through a process.

These books usually require more original content and planning, but that can also make them more valuable and distinctive. Instead of competing with thousands of nearly identical blank journals, you are creating something with a specific experience inside.

The goal is not to publish as many books as possible. A stronger beginner strategy is to create something original, useful, and thoughtfully designed for a particular reader.

## Can You Really Make Money With Amazon KDP?

Yes, it is possible to earn money by publishing books through Amazon KDP—but uploading a book does not automatically create sales.

Your income depends on several factors, including:

- Whether people are searching for your book’s topic
- The quality and originality of the book
- How appealing the cover looks
- Your title, description, categories, and keywords
- The price of the book
- Printing expenses
- Competition within your chosen niche
- Reviews and customer satisfaction
- How well you promote the book

When a printed book sells, Amazon calculates your royalty using the book’s list price, applicable royalty rate, and printing cost. This means the amount a customer pays is not the amount the publisher earns.

For example, a coloring book may sell for a reasonable retail price, but the printing cost must be deducted before you receive a royalty. Page count, book size, ink choice, and marketplace all affect that calculation.

This is why pricing cannot be based on guesswork. A book must be priced high enough to cover printing and leave room for a royalty, while still feeling like a fair value to the customer.

### Is Amazon KDP Passive Income?

Amazon KDP is often described as passive income because Amazon can print and ship books after they are published. You do not have to personally fulfill every order.

However, creating a book is not passive.

Before a book can earn anything, you may need to:

- Research the audience and competition
- Choose a focused book idea
- Create or legally obtain the artwork
- Design and format the interior
- Design the cover
- Write the product description
- Select appropriate keywords and categories
- Upload and preview the files
- Order and review a proof copy
- Correct any problems
- Promote the finished book

Even after publication, you may need to update your marketing, learn which ideas attract interest, and improve future books based on what you discover.

A more accurate description might be **work now with the possibility of ongoing sales later**.

### How Many Books Do You Need?

There is no magic number. One well-researched, high-quality book can outperform a shelf full of rushed ones.

Some publishers build a collection of related books so that customers who enjoy one may be interested in another. For example, a creator might begin with a desert-garden coloring book and later add books featuring herbs, butterflies, hummingbirds, or Southwest wildflowers.

That creates a recognizable theme rather than a jumble of unrelated products.

For a beginner, the first goal does not need to be replacing a full-time income. A more realistic goal is learning the complete publishing process and successfully creating one original book. That first finished book can become the foundation for everything that follows.

## What Does It Cost to Get Started With Amazon KDP?

Creating an Amazon KDP account and uploading a book does not require a publishing fee. With print-on-demand, Amazon prints a book after it is ordered and deducts the printing cost from the royalty, so you do not have to purchase inventory in advance.

However, creating and publishing a quality book may involve other expenses.

Possible costs include:

- Design or illustration software
- Original artwork or commercially licensed images
- Keyword and product-research tools
- Editing or proofreading
- Cover design
- Book-formatting assistance
- Proof copies and shipping
- Advertising or other promotional expenses
- An ISBN if you choose to purchase your own

You do not necessarily need all of these when creating your first book. The cost will depend on what you can create yourself, which free tools are available, and the type of book you want to publish.

### Canva and BookBolt

The KDP course inside the Pay It Forward Learning Center uses **Canva** and **BookBolt** as part of the publishing process.

Canva can be used to create covers and customize interior pages. A free Canva plan is available, although some images, features, and design tools require Canva Pro.

BookBolt is designed specifically for book publishing research and creation. It can help users explore keywords and categories, research book ideas, determine cover dimensions, and access interior templates. BookBolt is a separate service with its own plan options, so it should be considered an additional expense rather than part of the PIF membership price.

The course instructor recommends these tools, but beginners should evaluate each expense before subscribing. A shiny new tool is only helpful if we are actually going to open it and use it—my collection of forgotten kitchen gadgets has already taught me that lesson.

### Printing Choices Affect Your Profit

Printing cost varies according to the book’s:

- Page count
- Trim size
- Ink selection
- Paper type
- Sales marketplace

A primarily black-and-white coloring book may have a different printing cost from a full-color activity or children’s book. KDP calculates the cost during setup and provides a minimum allowable list price based on the book’s specifications.

Amazon also offers a printing-cost and royalty calculator. Using it before settling on a price can help you estimate how much you may earn from each sale.

### Start With One Thoughtful Project

It may be tempting to purchase every recommended program before creating the first page. A more manageable approach is to choose one book idea, understand what it requires, and decide which tools will genuinely help you complete it.

The goal is not to spend a small fortune preparing to make extra money. The goal is to learn the process while keeping the first project realistic.

## The Basic Amazon KDP Publishing Process

Although every book is different, most KDP projects follow the same general path.

### 1\. Choose a Specific Book Idea

Begin with an audience and a purpose, not simply a product.

Instead of deciding to make “a coloring book,” you might create:

- A simple desert-animal coloring book for young children
- A detailed Southwest garden coloring book for adults
- A healthy-food coloring and activity book for elementary-age children
- An encouraging coloring book for women entering retirement
- A holiday baking coloring book for families

A focused idea makes it easier to design the pages, choose keywords, create the cover, and explain who the book is for.

### 2\. Research the Market

Search Amazon for similar books and pay attention to:

- Popular subjects and themes
- Intended age groups
- Book dimensions and page counts
- Cover styles
- Selling prices
- Customer reviews
- Common complaints
- Opportunities to create something different or more useful

Research is meant to help you understand the market—not to copy another creator’s title, cover, description, artwork, or interior.

### 3\. Create the Interior

For a coloring book, the interior includes the illustrations and any supporting pages, such as a title page, copyright information, instructions, or test-coloring page.

The artwork must be original or legally licensed for commercial use. Images found through an internet search cannot automatically be placed in a book for sale.

Consider how the customer will use the book. You may want illustrations printed on only one side of each sheet or blank backing pages to reduce the chance of color bleeding onto another design. The final choices will affect the page count and printing cost.

### 4\. Design the Cover

The cover is often the first thing a potential customer notices. It should make the subject, audience, and style of the book immediately clear.

KDP covers must be sized correctly for the selected trim size, page count, and binding. The completed cover file generally includes the back cover, spine, and front cover as one design.

Because spine width depends on factors such as page count and paper selection, it is wise to determine the book’s final specifications before finishing the cover.

### 5\. Create the KDP Listing

During the setup process, you will enter information such as:

- Book title and subtitle
- Author or publisher name
- Book description
- Keywords
- Categories
- Publishing rights
- Intended audience
- Book specifications
- Price and sales territories

These details help Amazon understand the book and help shoppers decide whether it fits what they are seeking.

### 6\. Upload and Preview the Files

Next, upload the interior and cover files. KDP’s previewing tools allow you to check page placement, margins, bleed, cover alignment, and other potential printing problems.

Do not rush through this step. A small formatting mistake on a computer screen can become a very noticeable mistake in a printed book.

### 7\. Order a Proof Copy

A proof copy allows you to examine the physical book before making it available to customers.

Check:

- The clarity and thickness of the lines
- Whether any artwork is cut off
- Page order and orientation
- Spelling and punctuation
- Cover color and alignment
- Blank pages and backing pages
- The overall coloring experience

A book may look lovely on a screen and still reveal surprises once it is printed. Paper has a way of exposing our little secrets.

### 8\. Set the Price and Publish

After reviewing the estimated printing cost and royalty, choose a list price that makes sense for both the customer and your business.

Once the files and book details are approved, you can submit the book for publication. Amazon reviews the submission before making it available for sale.

Publishing is an exciting milestone, but it is not the final step. The book still needs to be discovered—which brings us to marketing.

## How Do People Find Your Amazon KDP Book?

Publishing a book makes it available for sale, but it does not guarantee that shoppers will find it.

Amazon is a search platform. People enter words and phrases describing what they want, such as “desert animals coloring book for kids” or “retirement coloring book for women.” Your title, subtitle, description, keywords, and categories help Amazon understand when your book may be relevant.

This is where research becomes important.

### Use Clear, Specific Keywords

A broad phrase such as **coloring book** describes millions of possible products. A more specific phrase tells Amazon—and the customer—much more.

For example:

- Southwest coloring book for adults
- Easy garden coloring book for seniors
- Healthy food coloring book for kids
- Baking coloring book for girls
- Inspirational coloring book for women

Keywords should accurately describe the book. Adding unrelated popular phrases may attract the wrong shopper and create a disappointing customer experience.

### Create a Cover That Works at Thumbnail Size

Amazon shoppers often see a small version of the cover first. The title should remain readable, and the main image should make sense even when the cover is displayed as a thumbnail.

A beautiful cover with tiny lettering may look wonderful in Canva but disappear into a blur on a search-results page. Before publishing, shrink the design on your screen and ask whether you can still understand it at a glance.

### Write a Helpful Book Description

The description should explain:

- Who the book is for
- What type of pages it contains
- What makes it useful or enjoyable
- The approximate experience or skill level
- Any important features the customer should know

The goal is not to stuff the description with repeated keywords. It is to help the right customer feel confident about purchasing the book.

### Use Pinterest and Your Existing Content

Pinterest could become part of the marketing plan because people use it to search for creative ideas, activities, gifts, educational resources, hobbies, and printables.

A publisher might create pins that lead to:

- The book’s Amazon listing
- A related blog article
- A behind-the-scenes look at creating the book
- A free sample coloring page
- A gift guide featuring the book
- A helpful resource connected to the book’s theme

For The Resource Wonder, a future coloring book could fit naturally into the larger marketing spiderweb:

**Pinterest pin → helpful blog post → coloring book or related resource**

This approach gives readers useful information before asking them to purchase anything.

### Build Around a Recognizable Theme

One book can also lead to related content and future products.

A healthy-food coloring book for children might connect with educational activities, simple recipes, printable worksheets, and videos for parents or teachers. A desert-garden coloring book could connect with gardening articles, plant guides, gift ideas, and seasonal Pinterest content.

Instead of relying on one isolated product, you begin creating a small collection of helpful resources around a subject you already enjoy.

That is where Amazon KDP becomes more than simply uploading a book. It can become another useful piece of a broader creative business.

## Common Amazon KDP Mistakes Beginners Should Avoid

Learning the technical steps is important, but understanding what **not** to do may protect your book—and your KDP account.

### Copying Another Publisher’s Work

Do not copy another book’s cover, title, description, illustrations, or interior pages. Changing the colors or rearranging a few design elements does not automatically make copied work original.

Amazon requires publishers to hold the necessary rights to everything they upload. Publishing material you do not own or have permission to use can result in a rejected book, removed listing, lost royalties, or damage to your account.

Market research should help you identify customer needs and develop your own ideas—not duplicate a successful book.

### Using Images Without Commercial Rights

A picture found through Google, Pinterest, or social media is not automatically free to use in a product for sale.

Before placing an image inside a coloring book or on its cover, confirm that:

- You created it yourself
- You hired an illustrator and received the necessary commercial rights
- You purchased an appropriate commercial license
- The image comes from a source that clearly permits your intended use

Always read the actual license. “Free” does not necessarily mean unrestricted, especially when images are used in products customers purchase.

### Misunderstanding AI-Generated Content

AI tools can help with brainstorming, planning, editing, and other parts of the creative process. However, Amazon currently requires publishers to disclose AI-generated text, images, or translations when publishing or republishing through KDP.

Amazon distinguishes between **AI-generated** and **AI-assisted** content:

- AI-generated content is text, artwork, or translations created by an AI tool—even when the creator substantially edits the result.
- AI-assisted content begins with work you created and uses AI to refine, edit, check, or improve it. Brainstorming ideas with AI and then creating the final work yourself is also considered AI-assisted.

Amazon does not currently require disclosure of AI-assisted content, but it does require disclosure of AI-generated content. The publisher remains responsible for ensuring that all content follows Amazon’s rules and does not violate anyone else’s rights.

For a coloring book, this means you should understand how every illustration was created and whether you have the right to publish it commercially.

### Creating a Book Before Researching the Audience

A beautiful book can still struggle if few people are searching for its topic—or if the market already contains hundreds of nearly identical choices.

Research first. Look for a specific audience, a clear purpose, and an opportunity to create something meaningfully different.

### Skipping the Proof Copy

The online previewer is useful, but it cannot fully show how the paper, line weight, margins, and cover colors will look in your hands.

Ordering a proof copy allows you to experience the book as a customer would. For a coloring book, you could even test several types of crayons, colored pencils, or markers before approving the final version.

### Expecting Immediate Income

A published book may not sell right away. It can take time to improve your keywords, create marketing content, learn what customers want, and build a collection of related products.

Amazon KDP should be approached as a skill and a small publishing business—not a lottery ticket wearing a pretty book cover.

## What Does the PIF Kindle Direct Publishing Class Cover?

If you are interested in Amazon KDP but feel overwhelmed by all the moving pieces, the **Kindle Direct Publishing (Basics)** class inside the Pay It Forward Learning Center offers a structured course outline for beginners.

Based on the lessons currently listed in the PIF classroom, the course begins with topics including:

- What Amazon KDP is
- How Amazon KDP works
- Creating an Amazon KDP account
- Completing tax information
- Adding banking and payment information
- Navigating the KDP dashboard
- Understanding paper and printing choices
- Comparing paperback and hardcover books
- Reviewing the overall KDP publishing workflow

The course outline then moves into research, book creation, publishing, artificial intelligence, troubleshooting, and marketing.

### Product and Niche Research

The KDP Product Research module includes lessons titled:

- How to Identify Successful Products
- How to Identify Your Product Categories
- Profitable and Untapped KDP Niches
- Top Niches and Sub-Niches

These topics suggest that students are introduced to researching possible book ideas and narrowing them for a particular market. Because I have not completed these lessons yet, I cannot personally evaluate the specific research methods being taught.

### Designing KDP Interiors

The course includes lessons on designing a book’s interior and creating custom KDP interiors. It also contains separate sections for cover design, labels, and product branding.

These lessons caught my attention because I want to learn how to create and sell coloring books. A coloring book needs more than an attractive cover—the interior pages must also be original, correctly formatted, and suitable for printing.

### Publishing Your First Book

The publishing module includes lessons covering:

- Publishing digital products
- Uploading files to Amazon KDP
- Kindle cover requirements
- Kindle Previewer

The classroom also contains recorded masterclasses connected to different parts of the program.

### Using ChatGPT for KDP

The course outline includes a section called **Using ChatGPT for KDP**, with lessons on:

- How to use ChatGPT with KDP
- Using ChatGPT to help craft KDP descriptions
- Using ChatGPT while researching KDP niches
- Using AI carefully

AI can help with brainstorming and organization, but publishers are still responsible for creating lawful, original work and following Amazon’s current rules.

### Marketing and Growing a KDP Business

Later modules listed in the classroom cover:

- Troubleshooting
- Growing a KDP business
- KDP marketing and working toward initial sales
- Business growth and scaling

Seeing these topics in the course outline is encouraging because publishing the book is only one part of the process. A finished book still needs a clear audience and a plan for helping potential customers discover it.

I have not completed the KDP course yet, so I am not presenting this as a personal review or promising a particular result. I am sharing what is currently included in the classroom outline and why the training interests me as a beginner who wants to learn how to create a coloring book.

## KDP Is Only One Class Inside the PIF Classroom

The Kindle Direct Publishing class is not a separate $25 course. It is one of the learning paths included inside the larger **Pay It Forward Learning Center**, also known as PIF.

PIF currently costs **$25 per month**, which gives members access to a classroom containing training on multiple ways to build skills and explore online-income opportunities.

Along with KDP, the classroom includes training related to subjects such as:

- Artificial intelligence
- User-generated content
- Digital marketing
- Affiliate marketing
- Content creation
- Online business tools
- Additional work-from-home income paths

Some courses are more developed than others, and new training may still be added. Members can choose the subject that interests them instead of trying to learn everything at once.

That is part of what makes the membership appealing to me. I may join because I want to learn how to create and sell coloring books, while someone else may be more interested in AI, UGC, or another class entirely.

The $25 monthly price covers access to the PIF learning community and its included classes. However, outside tools recommended within a particular course—such as Canva Pro or BookBolt for KDP—may have their own subscription costs.

PIF does not create the business for you, and the membership fee does not guarantee income. You still need to complete the lessons, practice the skills, create original work, and market what you publish.

But for someone who wants to explore several online-income possibilities without purchasing a separate high-priced course for every subject, having many classes in one classroom may offer a practical and affordable place to learn.

## Is Amazon KDP Right for You?

Amazon KDP may be worth exploring if you enjoy combining creativity with research and are willing to learn a step-by-step publishing process.

It may suit you if you:

- Enjoy creating books, activities, illustrations, or written content
- Have ideas that could help, entertain, or encourage a specific audience
- Are comfortable learning design and publishing tools
- Can pay attention to details and formatting requirements
- Are willing to research keywords, niches, and competing products
- Understand that building sales may take time
- Want to create products without storing or shipping inventory yourself

You do not need to be a professional author or graphic designer before you begin. You do need to be willing to learn, revise your work, and create something original.

KDP may not be the best fit if you:

- Need immediate or guaranteed income
- Want to copy designs that are already selling
- Dislike detailed computer work
- Are unwilling to review Amazon’s rules
- Expect AI to create an entire business without your involvement
- Do not want to market or talk about your finished books

For me, the coloring-book possibility makes KDP especially interesting. It brings together creativity, learning, and the opportunity to develop a real product. I can imagine beginning with one focused book, learning from every step, and then deciding whether I want to create more.

The first project does not have to be perfect or become a bestseller. Its most important job may be teaching you how the complete process works.

Sometimes the best way to discover whether an opportunity fits is not to study it forever. It is to choose one manageable idea, begin learning, and see where the next chapter leads.

## A Realistic Final Word

Amazon KDP offers a way to turn an original idea into a real book without purchasing inventory or shipping individual orders yourself. That makes self-publishing more accessible, but it does not remove the work involved.

A successful KDP project still requires:

- A thoughtful and original idea
- Research into the audience and market
- Properly licensed or original content
- Careful design and formatting
- A clear and accurate product listing
- Realistic pricing
- Marketing and patience

For me, learning how to create and sell a coloring book feels like a fun next step. It is creative, practical, and just far enough outside my comfort zone to make it interesting.

I do not expect to upload a few pictures and wake up as the coloring-book queen of Amazon. I want to learn how the process works, create something I am proud of, and see where that first book leads.

## Ready to Explore the PIF Learning Center?

The Kindle Direct Publishing class is one of many learning paths currently included in the Pay It Forward Learning Center.

For **$25 per month**, members can explore KDP along with training in AI, user-generated content, digital marketing, affiliate marketing, and other online-income skills. Course-related tools such as Canva Pro or BookBolt may cost extra, and membership does not guarantee income.
